Whether you're a basketball player curious about about how high you can fly or you're a high jumper trying to assess your next goal for competition, measuring your vertical jump is a process you can do in just a few minutes. A superior vertical jump requires strong, flexible muscles and joints in the legs. Once you know your vertical jump, you can set goals for improving it.

Step 1

Stand next to a wall or other surface you can mark with chalk. Reach up as high as you can with one arm and make a mark on the wall with the chalk.

Step 2

Scrape off some chalk with a dull knife, and place the chalk dust on the fingers of the same hand you held the chalk in. Stand next to the wall and, without moving your feet, jump as high as you can. Touch the wall with your chalked fingers, and land back on the floor.

Step 3

Check to make sure your fingers made a mark on the wall. If they didn't, repeat Step 2 with more chalk on your fingers this time.

Step 4

Stand on a step stool or ladder so you are eye-level with the higher chalk mark.

Step 5

Measure the distance between the two chalk marks in inches with a measuring tape. This is your jump height.

Tips and Warnings

  • Warm up with several jumps before attempting your measured jump. This will get your muscles stretched out and maximize your jumping ability.
