Canesten is an over-the-counter topical ointment used to treat fungal infections. Nursing mothers commonly use Canesten to treat heat rash occurring under their breasts. Heat rash is an overgrowth of candida that typically occurs when skin is warm and moist. Canesten contains clotrimazole. Clotrimazole is an effective anti-fungal medication that is safe for most people to use, according to "Focus on Nursing Pharmacology," however, you should always consult your physician before using Canesten or any other medication.
Step 1
Cleanse the affected area with mild soap and water.
Step 2
Pat the affected areas dry with a towel. Avoid using a scrubbing motion to dry your skin as this may further irritate your skin.
Step 3
Apply Canesten to the affected areas. Avoid applying Canesten to the nipple or areola because Canesten applied to this area could be ingested by your baby when nursing.
Step 4
Do your best to prevent your baby from coming into contact with Canesten while breastfeeding. Assess your infant after nursing to see if he has any Canesten on his skin. Gently wipe off any Canesten you find on your baby with a baby wipe.
