Diamond Bakery, the maker of Maui Sugar Maui Grahams, uses all natural ingredients, including raw cane sugars from the island of Maui. Maui Graham Crackers have a slightly sweet honey taste and crunchy texture, not like some graham crackers that soften as they absorb even room humidity. These crackers can be covered with a variety of toppings and still retain their hearty crunch.
Calories, Fat, Sodium
One serving of Maui Grahams, equal to eight crackers or 30 g, has 130 calories, with 3.5 g of fat, no cholesterol and 85 mg of sodium. Historically, graham crackers or biscuits were baked in large sheets and had to be broken into smaller pieces for eating. They were hard and dry, because they were made with unsifted, whole-wheat bran flour, which gave them a heavy, rough texture. The only way to eat them was by soaking them in boiling water or milk.
Carbohydrates and Protein
Maui Grahams have 22 g of total carbohydrates per serving, with 1 g of dietary fiber, 7 g of sugars and 2 g of protein. These crackers are made with enriched flour, which is milled wheat that has had a majority of the nutrients removed by the milling process. When flour is enriched, some of these nutrients are added back. These graham crackers contain wheat flour with niacin, reduced iron, thiamin, mononitrate, riboflavin and folic acid added in. These crackers also contain whole-wheat flour.
Oil
Maui Grahams contain palm oil, which is taken from the pulp of the oil palm. This oil has a red tint to it, due to its high concentration of beta-carotene. The red tint also serves as a natural food coloring in some foods. Palm oil is a highly saturated vegetable fat, containing saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. A diet high in saturated fats has been associated with increasing both good and bad cholesterol levels. A single serving of these crackers has 1.5 g of saturated fat.
Sugars
Maui Grahams contain Maui cane sugar, brown sugar and less than 2 percent honey. Eight Maui Sugar Maui Grahams have 7 g of sugars -- after all, they are called Maui Sugar Maui Grahams. Diamond Bakery, in business for over 90 years, introduced these crackers in 2002. Additional ingredients include salt, baking soda, yeast and natural vanilla flavor.
