Verilux light products are used to combat a variety of mood disorders, seasonal affect disorder (SAD), sleep problems and acne. Which light wavelengths are used depend on what disorder is being treated. Narrow 405 to 420 nm ultraviolet (UV) light is used to decrease inflammatory acne lesions, while full spectrum light is used to treat sleep, mood and energy difficulties from lack of natural light. Side effects from using light therapy appear to be mild and infrequent, according to Mayo Clinic staff.

Temporary Side Effects

Temporary side effects reported by the Holistic Online website include headaches, irritation of the eyes or mild nausea when treatment begins. Experimenting with amounts of light therapy can help the patient find her threshold where too much light becomes problematic.

Infrequent Side Effects

More intense, infrequent side effects reported by Columbia University include becoming overactive with increased sleep problems, restlessness and feelings of irritation. Patients may tend to feel "high" and have accelerated thought and actions.

Other Side Effects

Mayo Clinic staff report other side effects including vomiting, fatigue, mania and dry mouth. For those using light therapy for acne, there may be soreness and redness around the treated areas.
