Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid manufactures an insufficient amount of thyroid hormone. Typical treatment of hypothyroidism includes the administration of prescription thyroid replacement medication, according to "Focus on Nursing Pharmacology." Some people believe the iodine found in kelp can assist the thyroid in functioning better, according to "Prescription for Natural Cures." However, kelp should only be used under the supervision of your physician because too much iodine can be harmful to the thyroid, according to "Foundations of Nursing."
Step 1
Discuss with your physician your desire to supplement your thyroid treatment with kelp. Your doctor will review your lab work, medical history and medications to determine if kelp is a suitable supplement for you.
Step 2
Take kelp supplements in the dosage and frequency prescribed by your physician, if your physician agrees that kelp is a suitable supplement. Eat a meal or snack with your kelp to prevent stomach upset.
Step 3
Consult your physician and stop taking the kelp supplements if you experience signs or symptoms of iodine toxicity, which include abdominal pain, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, vomiting, shortness of breath and a metallic taste in your mouth.
