Pilates is a method of low-impact exercise created by Joseph Pilates. Developed in the early 1900s, exercises are performed on a mat -- with or without props -- or special Pilates fitness equipment, including the reformer and Cadillac. There are no set standard requirements for Pilates certification. Organizations like Basi Pilates offer teacher certification training at basic and advanced levels. A basic knowledge of anatomy and fitness principles as well as teaching experience is recommended. Passing a written test, and sometimes a performance-based exam, is required for certification.
Basic Matwork
You can complete a matwork training course to teach basic Pilates classes on the mat. You attend 100 class hours to complete six modules and observe up to 15 hours of Pilates classes. Students must also complete up to 30 hours of apprentice teaching. An evaluation of your prior specialization in related areas of study, including physical therapy and massage, is required before admittance.
Props
Students can take an advanced matwork class and learn to add props to Pilates classes. Only Pilates instructors with a basic, or Level I, certification can sign up for the course. Attendance is not required, as the class is offered online. You must be at least 18 years old and have a functioning knowledge of basic arithmetic. You have six months to complete the course. It is compulsory to participate in 20 Pilates-style classes. Individuals with at least two years of teaching experience may count teaching classes toward this requirement.
Comprehensive Course
A comprehensive Pilates course teaches matwork and reformer exercises. The reformer is a special piece of fitness equipment with a sliding platform, pulleys and other accessories specifically designed for Pilates exercises. You are required to complete 12 modules, which make up 500 hours of classes over a six-month period. Students complete up to 100 hours of observation and up to 200 hours of apprentice teaching. Qualifications regarding related areas of study such as yoga or massage are evaluated prior to course acceptance.
Dance Specialization
A dance specialization Pilates certification requires that aspiring teachers take an extra six modules in addition to the requirements for a comprehensive teacher training course. These extra modules focus on teaching you to enhance the technique of dancers and reduce their risk of injury through Pilates exercises. Students must observe up to 100 hours of classes and complete up to 200 hours of apprentice teaching. Only skilled dancers with professional experience are admitted.
