Alli, the brand name for the weight loss medicine orlistat, blocks the absorption of 25 percent of the fat you eat; this fat then passes through your intestines and is excreted though your bowels. Eating meals that contain more than 15 g of fat can exacerbate this reaction and may cause changes in bowel habits, so it is important to be aware of the fat content of meals. Prior to using alli for weight loss, consult with your health care provider to see if this product is safe for you to use.

Step 1

Buy the alli starter kit either online or at a drug store. The starter kit includes a bottle of alli capsules, a carrying case for your pills, information about the personalized online weight loss program and reference booklets including a healthy eating guide, calorie and fat counter, a daily journal and quick facts cards.

Step 2

Take one capsule of alli three times a day with meals that have at least 15 grams of fat. You can take the capsule one hour before, during, or up to one hour after a meal. If you eat additional snacks, do not take extra capsules. Take alli with a full glass of water. Drugs.com suggests taking a multivitamin every day before bed, since alli may lower the absorption of certain vitamins in the body.

Step 3

Eat a low-fat, balanced diet while taking alli. The alli website recommends following a reduced calorie diet while taking alli as well. These capsules do not block the absorption of calories from protein or carbohydrates, so if you eat an excess of these calories while on alli, you will lose weight at slower pace.

Step 4

Use the alli website's online tools to set a goal weight and weekly goals as well as to monitor your progress. Your journal is a place to log your eating habits and feelings about the weight loss process, and to reinforce why you want to reach your goal.

Tips and Warnings

  • Use alli as part of an overall healthy lifestyle change. Exercise can help you reach your weight loss goals and promote overall health, along with a balanced diet.
  • Do not use alli without first consulting your health care professional. This product may not be appropriate for everyone. Tell your physician about any medication you are taking, as alli can interact with some drugs.
