Hand-eye coordination is a skill that begins to develop in childhood. It's the ability of the eyes to manage the movement of the hands, says the Encyclopedia of Children's Health, and it allows you to do things like play ball or type on a computer. As you get older, you may want to fine-tune those skills, particularly if you want to improve your skills with sports such as baseball, tennis and basketball.
Play Ball
Practice can help your hand-eye coordination. Have a friend toss a ball toward some type of goal while you try to catch it with your hand, says Bodyomics. You can also play a more involved game of catch. Mark a ball with letters, then start a game of catch. But just before you catch the ball, try to spot a letter -- and call out to your partner which letter you see. If you can't find a catch buddy, just toss a ball in the air and catch it as it falls.
Pick Up a Racket
Though just about any sport will help improve your hand-eye coordination, Bodyomics says racket sports are especially effective. Whether you pick up a pingpong paddle, a racquetball racquet or tennis racket, hit the ball back and forth with a friend as many times as you can. It's good practice when forced to respond to the ball flying at you after your partner hits it.
Play Games
Video games are another way to practice hand-eye coordination as they can work both your motor and visual skills, says Bodyomics. Even a children's game of Connect Four can help your hand-eye skills. The Franklin Institute also says that playing Bingo can improve hand-eye coordination and help sharpen memory.
