You wake up here every day. This is where you eat many meals. It is your home. The foods you keep in your home define how healthy you will eat throughout the day. Stocking your pantry with the right foods is the most important part of healthy eating and it begins at the grocery store.

Set a Goal

Whether you want to lose weight or you just want to start on a path of eating more fruits and vegetables, you need to have a goal. Your nutritional goals are what will guide your grocery store purchases. With the recognition that healthy eating begins in the grocery store, Dr. Ann Kulze created several shopping lists with specific health goals in mind.

Make a List

If healthier eating is a new concept, start simple. Create a list of healthy foods you already enjoy. List the fruits and vegetables you would like to incorporate into your eating plan. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute created a list of healthy, low-fat items for health-conscious eaters. It includes items like rice, low-fat dairy products, whole wheat breads, white meats, beans, fresh fruits and vegetables.

A Fresh Start

The fruits and vegetables are not the only thing that is fresh at the grocery store. You can get a fresh start as well. Each time you walk into the supermarket you have the opportunity to create a healthier you. Many healthy foods are available at your local store. Keep your goals in mind as you walk the aisles and avoid junk food traps that could derail those goals.

Smart Indulgences

Speaking of junk food traps, keep in mind that a healthy eating plan does not mean depriving yourself of your favorite treats. However, it is important to plan treats in advance, especially if you are trying to lose weight or manage a health condition like diabetes or cardiovascular disease. While you are at the grocery store, you can read labels of your favorite items and compare their nutritional values before you even put them in your cart. Remember, treats are fine as long as they are enjoyed in moderation and you don't neglect your healthy eating goals.
