Breathing problems can be the result of asthma, emphysema, pneumonia, heart disease or stress. As you age, you are also likely to experience a 20-percent reduction in your breathing ability, according to the University of Missouri. Performing lung strengthening exercises can help increase the strength of your lungs as well as your energy. Lung exercises can also help prevent shortness of breath. Always consult your doctor before beginning lung strengthening exercises with a medical condition.

Step 1

Learn to breath through your belly. Lie flat on your back with a small pillow underneath your head. Place the palm of one of your hands on your stomach -- just below your ribs. Slowly take deep breaths so that you feel your stomach expanding. Complete this exercise for a few minutes at a time, three times each day.

Step 2

Hum your way to stronger lungs. Sit down with your back straight up in a chair. Take a deep breath, and as you exhale, make a humming sound for as long as possible. To lengthen the amount of time you are able to hum, tighten your abdominal muscles. Complete this exercise for three minutes, three times per day.

Step 3

Engage in an aerobic exercise, five day a week for a total of 30 minutes per day. This could include jogging, walking, cycling, jumping roping, dancing, swimming, skating, rowing or skiing. Whatever activity you decide on should be enough to get your heart rate up and cause you to break into a light sweat.
