1. It's Just Fat
Cellulite may have a special name but it is really just fat in the subcutaneous level of the skin. Because it is close to the skin's surface it can be seen. Cellulite looks lumpy and has often been referred to as having a cottage cheese like appearance. It usually appears on the buttocks, thighs or stomach. If you have cellulite you are not alone. It is estimated about 90 percent of women have some degree of cellulite. Women have more cellulite than men in part because they naturally have a higher percentage of body fat.
2. It May be in Your Genes
Although even women who are at their ideal body weight can have cellulite being overweight can also increase the amount of cellulite you have. Age also may cause cellulite to make an appearance. This may occur because skin becomes thinner. At least to some extent the amount of cellulite you have may be hereditary. Which means it's in your genes. If your mom had a lot of cellulite chances are you will too.
3. Stop Cellulite Before it Starts
Although you may not be able to completely prevent cellulite from developing it may be possible to reduce the amount that appears. Eat healthy, exercise and stay at a healthy weight. This will help reduce excess body fat, usually the less fat you have the less cellulite that will appear. Drink a lot of water. It helps the skin stay well hydrated. Don't start smoking or stop if you do. Smoking can damage the skin. Keeping the skin healthy and hydrated helps it stay firmer and may prevent cellulite from appearing.
4. Do Lotions and Potions Work?
Cellulite creams are available that may claim to get rid of the lumpy stuff. However creams will not break up and decrease fat cells. It can improve collagen production and firm the skin and help reduce the appearance of cellulite. Other treatments for cellulite include endermologie, which is a vacuum like device that is massaged over areas with cellulite. The device is thought to break up the fat cells. Another treatment option is mesotherapy. It is an injection of vitamins intended to break up the fat cells.
5. Home Remedies to Give a Try
It doesn't hurt to try home remedies for cellulite reduction. There is no scientific proof they work but there is almost no cost, they are easy to do and don't take too much time. So why not give them a try? Make a coffee scrub. The caffeine in coffee can help the skin look firmer. Use instant coffee and rub the coffee grounds on your troubled areas. Use a circular motion. Rinse after a few minutes. Another home remedy is a brush massage. Using a soft bristle brush, massage each area that has cellulite for five minutes. The theory is it helps even out the fat under the skin and reduces the lumpy appearance.
