5 Things You Need to Know About Using Shiatsu to Relieve Constipation

1. Shiatsu Means Finger Pressure

Shiatsu is the Japanese word for finger pressure. It is one of the oldest forms of hands-on healing. The foundation of shiatsu is the concept of meridians, pathways in our body where energy flows. The purpose of shiatsu is to remove any disruptions to the flow of energy in these meridians using a massage technique. Shiatsu improves overall health and alleviates constipation and other symptoms of poor digestive health. Many people also find that it helps to alleviate headaches and other aches and pains.

2. Do it Yourself or Go to a Pro

You can perform shiatsu on yourself or you can go to a professional, a person who has completed a course and received certification. If you go to a professional, you will lie on the floor on a thick mat with your clothes on. If the shiatsu practitioner determines that you have a lot of blockages, a number of sessions might be recommended. However, many people report that they feel energized and experience relief after one session.

3. Let Your Fingers do the Walking

To use shiatsu techniques to alleviate constipation on your own, take the thumb of one hand, and apply light pressure to the spot on the back of your hand at the web between your index finger and thumb. Your other fingers should be on the other side of your hand. Apply the pressure for 2 minutes and then do the same thing on your other hand. You can also apply firm pressure to the area that is about 4 finger widths above your wrist on the back of your forearm. Again, apply pressure for 2 minutes on each side; this improves energy flow in the bowel.

4. The Pressure Mounts

Bend your elbow. Take your thumb and apply light pressure to the outside edges of the crease formed at your bent elbow. You can also place your hands three finger widths below your belly button in the middle of your body. Apply light pressure and take deep breaths to help relieve constipation.

5. Use Tennis Balls for Hard-to-Reach Places

Locate the spot between your 9th and 10th rib. Move your fingers 2 finger widths on either side of your spine at this spot and apply pressure for two minutes. Some people tape tennis balls together and lie on them in order to apply pressure in this area.
