How to Put Boxing Hand Wraps On

Boxing hand wraps are similar to slightly less elastic compression bandages and are used to protect the tendons in your hands and support the wrists and thumb. A proper hand wrap is often the difference between a good boxing session and a sprained thumb. The wraps come in two specific lengths, 180 inches for men and 120 inches for children and smaller people. The wraps have a thumb loop on one end and a Velcro strip on the other, which holds the wrap in place. You can find hand wraps at sporting goods stores and boxing supply houses.

Step 1

Start with either hand. If you prefer, wrap your dominant hand first. Keep the wrap coiled so that you have better control and unwind it as your wrap your wrists and knuckles.

Step 2

Hold your hand palm down with your fingers spread wide. Put the wrap's thumb loop around your thumb. Wind the wrap over the back of your hand and around your wrist four times.

Step 3

Pull the wrap between your thumb and index finger and wrap it three times around your hand. Pull the wrap between your index and second finger and wrap it around your wrist once. Pull the wrap between your second and ring fingers and wrap it around your wrist once.

Step 4

Pull the wrap between your ring and pinkie fingers and wrap it around your wrist once. Pull the wrap between your thumb and index fingers and wrap it four times around your hand.

Step 5

Bring the wrap between your thumb and index finger and wrap your knuckles up to four times. Wrap down your wrist, four times, so that the wrap extends about two inches past your wrist joint. Secure the wrap with the Velcro strip and repeat with the other hand.
