All golfers want to play at their best, regardless of ability. The proper understanding of the golf swing fundamentals helps drastically in that regard. Golfers use different fundamental set-ups in order to hit different golf shots. Hitting low shots, hooks and specialty chip shots are made easier by the use of a strong grip.
A strong grip in golf is where the hands are rotated so far over that the "V's" formed by the thumb and forefinger point well to the left of the right armpit. A neutral position has those V's pointing at the right armpit, and a weak grip positions them to the right. The strong grip position closes the club face before the swing even starts. It also delofts the club face, lowering trajectory and adding distance.
Right to Left
Golfers will primarily use a strong grip for right to left golf shots. Hitting draws is essential to being a better player, and golfers have a variety of ways to hit this shot. You could adjust your stance, ball position, swing path or hand action to achieve this result, but some golfers focus on making their grip stronger. This naturally will keep the club face slightly closed depending on the strength of the grip. The shot will come out with right to left spin.
Lower Shots
Strengthening the grip also delofts the club face for a lower, penetrating ball flight. This is very useful when playing knock down shots, which send the ball on a much lower trajectory for control. Stronger grips are also beneficial when playing in the wind. Golfers in the southern states like Texas that are famous for high winds are known for playing with stronger grips. This allows them to maintain distance even when facing 30 mile per hour winds.
Texas Turn-Down
The Texas Turn-Down is a specialty short game shot made famous by Dave Pelz in his award winning book "The Short Game Bible." This shot is only used for extreme situations where the golfer needs to keep the ball low -- perhaps under some tree limbs or branches -- and also run the ball through thick grass like fescue or rough. Hitting the shot with an extremely strong grip keeps the ball low and adds top spin so the ball will bounce out of the tall grass and onto the green.
