Basketball is clearly a team game and when you can work the ball around, find the best shot and put it up, your team clearly has a better chance of winning than when you wait for one player to get hot and dominate the scoring. Improving your shot can be a great attribute for your team. When you shoot with the proper fundamentals you have a chance to make more shots on a consistent basis.

Step 1

Spread your feet slightly wider than shoulder width apart. If you are right-handed, place your right foot about 3 to 6 inches in front of your left foot. Do the opposite if you are left-handed. Flex your knees so you are in an athletic position and can jump easily.

Step 2

Raise the ball to the level of your forehead. The weight of the ball should be spread evenly between your finger tips on your shooting hand. Your opposite hand should be on the side of the ball to help you get it in the proper position before releasing the ball.

Step 3

Focus your eyes on the front rim of the basket. When you shoot, you want to get the ball just past that front rim. Begin the shooting process by jumping straight up. The higher you can get while maintaining control of your leap, the better chance you have of shooting the ball without getting it blocked.

Step 4

Snap your wrist toward the hoop when you are at the top of your leap. Maintain your focus on the front of the rim. Once you release the ball, the middle finger of your shooting hand should be pointing directly at the front of the rim.
