Slow-pitch softball is a game that features a lot of scoring and home runs. Pitchers lob the ball to the plate and seemingly invite the hitter to whale on the pitch with a hard swing. However, those pitchers are often trying to make the hitter think the pitch is in his comfort zone but in reality making the pitch miss those spots by a few inches. As a result, hitting the long ball can be challenging in slow-pitch softball.
Stance
Step 1
Stand with your feet shoulder width apart in the batter's box. Stand in the rear of the batter's box so you can move forward with your feet as the pitch is on the way to the plate.
Step 2
Take a shuffle step towards the pitcher as the ball descends toward home plate. This is done by sliding your front foot forward, your back foot forward and then taking an additional step with your front foot before swinging the bat. This will ensure you get all your weight and strength behind the ball when you swing.
Step 3
Focus on the softball as you swing. You can survey the field prior to the pitch, but once the ball is on the way you must look at the center of the ball.
Step 4
Drive your bottom hand through the ball with force and strength. If you are a right-handed hitter, this will be your left hand. Then, snap your top wrist as you make contact with the ball. As your hands drive through the ball, make sure you have a slight uppercut so you can drive the ball for height and distance. It is important that the uppercut is not pronounced. If it is, you will hit the ball high but it won't reach the fence.
Step 5
Drive the ball where it is pitched. Good power hitters will pull the inside pitch, hit the pitch over the middle to center field and take the outside pitch to the opposite field. You don't have to pull every pitch to hit a home run. If a right-handed batter tries to pull the outside pitch, the likely result is a ground ball to shortstop or a fly ball to left field. If you go with the pitch, you have an excellent chance to hit the ball for power no matter where it is located.
