While passing, defense and rebounding are all important fundamentals, there is perhaps no more important skill in basketball than shooting. After all, without accurate shooting, a basketball team won't score many points. If you want to be an important member of your basketball team, learning the basic steps of shooting the basketball is just the first step to becoming a well-rounded player.

Step 1

Create a proper grip on the ball by holding the basketball in the tips of your fingers on your dominant hand. Make sure the ball rests on the pads of your fingers, not in the palm of your hand. Bring your other hand on the side of the basketball to help support the ball.

Step 2

Align your feet to the basket so they are both pointing at it. Bend your knees slightly and hold the ball at your chest.

Step 3

Jump straight up in the air. As you jump, bring your arms up with the ball so it is right in front of your face. Straighten your shooting arm so it is parallel with your body. Bend your non-shooting elbow and keep supporting the ball so it doesn't come loose.

Step 4

Push the ball up just above eye level as you reach the top of your jump. Remove your non-shooting hand from the ball. Immediately push the ball toward the hoop with your shooting hand, extending and straightening your arm.

Step 5

Flick your wrist as your fingers leave the ball to create backspin on the ball. Hold your arm up in the air extended, with your wrist cocked for a proper follow through. Try to land in the same spot from which you jumped so you're not jumping forward, backward or to either side.

Tips and Warnings

  • Have a coach or experienced player watch your form and help correct any inconsistencies in your shot.
