Many people who struggle with weight loss, fitness, obesity or healthy lifestyles turn to residential programs in an attempt to fully address the problem. There are a variety of programs from which to choose. Residential programs vary based on goals, medical conditions, lifestyle and finances. Deciding on a residential program for weight-loss goals might be a useful option for those who cannot manage to meet or maintain healthier weights at home.
Hospital-style Programs
Some residential weight-loss and exercise programs take place as part of an in-patient unit at a hospital. This is often the case for individuals who meet the criteria for obesity. In-patient programs seek to keep the individual safe while reducing food and caloric intake. Often such patients are not physically able to incorporate an exercise component to treatment. They may also be candidates for bariatric surgery. Upon successful completion of an in-patient weight-loss program, the patient might then be referred to a residential or out-patient weight-loss and exercise program. Consult with your insurance company to determine if coverage is provided.
Retreat-style Programs
Many adults of all shapes and sizes may consider a weight loss vacation or retreat. These residential programs range from one week to five weeks, depending on individual goals. More intense programs help obese people redefine their relationship with food and eating. Further, people who attend retreats are educated on better eating, nutrition and exercise. Average out-of-pocket expense, as advertised in 2011 brochures, is around $3,000 per week, though booking a longer length of stay may reduce the weekly price. Lighter programs incorporate more of a spa-like atmosphere. Clients are provided with nutritious, low-calorie meals, a variety of fitness programs and spa treatments that claim to firm and tone the body.
Children and Adolescents
Summer camps are a popular form of weight loss and exercise programs for children and adolescents. Some parents and campers choose programs that are gender-specific or seek out camps that provide activities of specific a interest, such as horseback riding or water sports. These programs follow a traditional camp-like schedule and atmosphere, but incorporate fitness, healthy eating and weight loss into daily activities. As of 2011, summer camp costs generally range from about $600 to $2,000 per week, with additional expenses for transportation to and from the camp.
Cautions for Programs
Discuss treatment options with your physician when determining if a residential program is appropriate for you. You may also consult with a nutritionist and fitness trainer to gain their professional recommendations on treating your weight loss and fitness goals. When selecting a program, understand the financial obligations, possible additional expenses, post-treatment requirements and impact it may have on aspects of your life such as work, school and relationships.
