Bladder surgeries vary based on your diagnosis, and include sling procedures and cystoceles, or urinary incontinence procedures. Each bladder surgery involves a specific time frame regarding rehab and treatment. Exercises are an essential part of the treatment and rehab program that helps to regain strength and function. While you can perform exercises after bladder surgery at home, always consult your doctor or physical therapist for proper exercise technique and personalized recommendations.
Step 1
Perform Kegel exercises, or pelvic floor isometric exercises, by pulling in your pelvic floor muscles. These are the muscles you use to stop urinating. Contract these muscles for three seconds, then release and rest for three seconds. Perform 10 to 15 repetitions and repeat three times daily.
Step 2
Go for a daily 10-minute walk at the end of the second week following bladder surgery. Walking is a low-impact exercise that improves stamina and strength.
Step 3
Progress the exercises gradually as your strength improves. For example, add 10 minutes to your daily walk every two weeks.
Step 4
Rest between exercises and workouts when you are very tired or feeling discomfort. In general, exercise two to four days per week, but follow your doctor's specific recommendations regarding the overall duration of your rest and exercise intervals, as these are based on the severity of your surgery and condition.
Tips and Warnings
- Visit your surgeon, doctor or physical therapist every three to four weeks. During these follow-up visits, discuss additional exercises and the overall progress of your recovery. Allowing your body and muscles to rest improves the overall rehab and treatment plan.
- Avoid lifting heavy objects or participating in strenuous activities for at least six weeks following surgery to prevent any additional ruptures or other problems with the bladder. Perform the exercises at your own pace. Listen to your body and stop the exercise immediately if you feel any pain or discomfort.
