BMI refers to body mass index. It is calculated by an equation that uses your height and weight. This measurement tells you approximately how much body fat you have, and classifies you as underweight, normal weight, overweight or obese. If you discover that your BMI is too low or high, you can begin to take the steps to prevent future health problems linked to weight issues. A BMI below 18.5 is considered underweight, between 18.5 to 24.9 is normal weight, 25.0 to 29.9 is overweight and over 30.0 indicates obesity. In terms of pounds and inches, the equation formula is weight divided by your height squared and multiplied by 703.

Calculate Your BMI

Step 1

Step on the scale to get your most current weight in pounds, and use the measuring tape to confirm your current height in inches. Write these numbers down on your paper for reference.

Step 2

Using your calculator, square your height. This means to multiply your height in inches by the same number. For example, if you are 64 inches tall, you would multiply 64 x 64 and get 4,096.

Step 3

Divide your weight by your previous calculation of your height-squared. Continuing with the previous example, if you weigh 130 pounds, your equation would be 130 divided by 4,096. This gives you 0.0317.

Step 4

Take this number and multiply it by 703. In this case, it would be 0.0317 x 703, giving you 22.3. This number is your body mass index. From this measurement, you can determine your weight classification.

Tips and Warnings

  • Keep track of each calculation result on your paper. This way, if you find an error in your calculation, you can easily trace back your steps. You can also find BMI calculators on the Internet if you are having trouble completing this equation.
  • Athletes might get an overweight or obese classification based on their BMI because their weight is high due to their high muscle mass percentage. This does not mean they have a weight problem. Women often have more body fat than men. Senior citizens often have more body fat than younger people.
