How to Take Flaxseed Oil and Cod-Liver Oil

Flaxseed oil and cod-liver oil are two supplements that have been found to have beneficial effects on heart health. Both can help lower triglycerides and blood pressure and may reduce the risk of developing heart disease. They typically come in liquid form, although sometimes they can be found in capsule form. While these are natural oils, consult your health care professional prior to using either of these supplements, as they may not be suitable for individuals with certain medical conditions and can interact with some medications.

Step 1

Take 1 to 2 tbsp. of flaxseed oil daily, or 1 to 2 capsules daily, if you are taking it in capsule form, says the University of Maryland Medical Center. If you are using flaxseed oil as a substitute for fish oil, know that 7.2 g of flaxseed oil is equal to approximately 1 g of fish oil.

Step 2

Take flaxseed oil at a different time than when you take any of your medications, vitamins or other supplements. The University of Maryland says that flaxseed oil can reduce the body's ability to absorb oral medications or nutrients if taken at the same time.

Step 3

Take cod-liver oil based on the reasons for which you are consuming it. According to Rxlist.com, you should consume 20 mL of cod-liver oil daily to lower triglycerides, 30 mL a day for high cholesterol, and 20 mL a day to help lower blood pressure.
