Lacrosse is a fast-paced sport that is almost as much fun to watch as it is to play. Several manufacturers produce lacrosse heads in a range of makes and models. Choosing the right head for a beginner is an important step in the transition into this action-packed sport.

Cost

Lacrosse heads vary widely in price. If you're a beginner, choose a moderately priced head, especially if you are unsure whether you will maintain interest in the sport. Expensive heads tend to be tailored to advanced players who require a specific style or specification to meet their needs.

Position

Choose a lacrosse head that will suit the position that you intend to pursue. Defensive players tend to prefer a head with rigid side walls and reinforced structure. Midfielders and attackers usually select a lightweight head that allows a quick release and promotes ball security.

Specifications

Most beginner lacrosse leagues are lenient on the exact specifications that are allowed for lacrosse heads. However, high school and college lacrosse have specific regulations regarding the length, width and depth of a lacrosse head. Some manufacturers produce heads that do not comply with these rules. Be aware of the regulations set by the league.

Pocket

Lacrosse heads are strung using a variety of materials and methods. Soft mesh is the easiest material to break in and requires the least amount of maintenance. Hard mesh is also a good option for new players. Avoid traditional strung lacrosse heads for a beginner as they then to require more care and adjustment to maintain a proper pocket.
