Stationary bikes feature varying weight capacities, from less than 200 lbs. to 400 lbs. or more. What determines how much weight a bike can handle is the quality of the construction/materials used to manufacture that particular model. Several types of stationary bikes are available, including uprights, recumbent bikes and indoor cycling bikes. Prices listed are based on February 2011 pricing at major online retailers.

Types

Of the three primary types of stationary bikes, each offers its advantages. Upright stationary bikes are the most traditional style with an upright or bent-over riding position similar to riding a bicycle. A person 300 lbs. or more may find the position a bit uncomfortable, but this can vary from person to person. A recumbent bike places you in a more seated position that heavier people may find to be more comfortable because of the added back support. Indoor cycles are upright exercise bikes designed for high-intensity workouts.

Upright Bikes

Schwinn’s lineup of upright exercise bikes for 2011 includes one model with a 300-lb. capacity -- the Schwinn 140 Upright, which retails for about $350. Another top manufacturer of exercise bikes is ProForm. The ProForm Live Bike, which retails for $1,000, offers an increased weight capacity of 350 lbs. For those on a budget, Marcy manufacturers discount stationary bikes, which sell at major retailers, such as Walmart and Amazon.com. The Marcy PL-43211 and Upright Fan Cycle are two models that feature 300-lb. weight capacities and price tags less than $200.

Recumbent Bikes

Recumbent bikes are popular choices for people with back pain or who are overweight. Schwinn offers two recumbent bikes featuring maximum weight capacities of 300 lbs., including the 220, 230 and 240 series. The ProForm ZR3 is a $400 recumbent exercise bike with a 300-lb. weight capacity and seven-year warranty on the frame. The Marcy ME711A is a budget recumbent bike at $170 that features a weight capacity of 300 lbs.

Indoor Cycling Bikes

Indoor cycle classes are commonplace in gyms around the U.S. and for good reason. These classes offer a high-intensity 30- to 60-minute workout that burns 500 or more calories per workout. At 300 or more lbs., you may want to consult your doctor prior to taking part in any vigorous aerobic activity. Indoor bikes with weight capacities of 300 lbs. or more can often cost $1,000 or more. For instance, the Schwinn IC Pro Indoor Cycle features a 300-lb. weight capacity and a price of about $1,150. A commercial-grade indoor bike, like the IC Pro, is the best choice for heavier individuals because they are built stronger.
