Softball is a sport played across the country by men, women and children at many levels. Softball is played as slow-pitch, where the pitcher lobs the ball on a slow, high arc or fast-pitch where pitchers fire the ball in at high speeds with a windmill type motion. The official scorer of each game is responsible for keeping track of and recording the stats of the game, including hits, runs, strikeouts and errors. Errors refer to various misplays by the defense and are the same for softball as for regular baseball.
Step 1
Charge an error if a fielder such as the first baseman drops a good throw that causes the runner to be safe.
Step 2
Call an error when a fielder makes a poor throw to a base, where the runner would have been out had the throw been on target. This applies to throws in the dirt, high or wide.
Step 3
Record an error when a throw is made to a base that more than one fielder could have covered, but neither did. Charge the error to the fielder that should have made the play, in your opinion. This happens at second base most often.
Step 4
Charge an error to a fielder, including the catcher, who is charged with obstruction by the umpire and a base is awarded to the base runner or batter.
Step 5
Call an error when the fielder makes his throw to a base or home plate and it hits the runner, the umpire or the bat.
Step 6
Charge an error to any fielder who drops a fly ball that should have been a routine play in your opinion.
