Side Effects of a Low Dose of HCG

Human chorionic gonadotropin, or HCG, the hormone that aids in the ovary production of an egg also stimulates its release during a woman's stage of ovulation. This hormone is used to treat women who have difficulty getting pregnant. In low-dose form, HCG injections along with a very restricted diet has become popular as a weight-loss strategy. MayoClinic.com, however, states that virtually no evidence exists that proves HCG helps you lose weight. Even in a low-dose form, HCG can create side effects.

Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome

Whether you take HCG shots for infertility problems or the lower dose HCG to purportedly help you lose weight, as a woman you may experience ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. MayoClinic.com states that approximately 25 percent of the women who use HCG develop a brief and usually mild version of OHSS. This may produce symptoms such as queasiness and vomiting, bloating, pain in your abdomen and diarrhea. MayoClinic.com states this mild side effect of HCG typically ends in a week. However, if you get such symptoms as shortness of breath, severe pain or severe nausea, you may have the more serious form of OHSS and need medical treatment immediately.

Depression

Like any infusion of a hormone, human chorionic gonadotropin can alter your moods and mental state. When you begin injections of HCG, you may sink into a mild depression, Drugs.com notes. This feeling of emptiness and sadness typically will rectify itself as you continue your HCG treatment. If it becomes severe, however, you need to speak with a doctor or psychiatrist. Depression if left unchecked can interrupt your normal activities and lead to thoughts of suicide.

Breast Tenderness

Your breasts may feel tender at times because of the hormone changes in your body, Drugs.com reports. Your body senses a change and may react to it. Your breasts also may swell under the influence of HCG injections. If this side effect continues after a week, call your practitioner and ask her advice.

Headaches

Along with other potential side effects, low doses of HCG can produce a string of headaches following your early use of it, Drugs.com indicates. The pain should manifest in a mild form. Drinking increased amounts of fluid in your diet may help deter this side effect of HCG. If headaches persist or cause severe pain, seek medical attention immediately. You may have a health issue unrelated to or triggered by HCG.

Irritability

When beginning the low dose of HCG, you may feel irritable, Drugs.com indicates. At first you may barely notice this side effect, but those around you may feel its effects. You may snap verbally at others when in conversation. You may have trouble meeting a task and become increasingly irritable performing it.
