Ever since the NBA banned the first Air Jordan from professional basketball back in 1985 because of its "unofficial" black and red color scheme, the game has been on for sneakerheads looking for new designer kicks. Manufacturers like Nike release new shoes nearly every day featuring a variety of stunning colorways -- but only a few perform like they look.

Jordan CP3.IV

Professional point guard Chris Paul was born the same year as the infamous ban on Michael Jordan's signature shoes. In a testimony to the longevity of the brand, a quarter of a century later Paul is wearing signature Jordans of his own -- the new Jordan CP3.IV. "My shoe is like playing a video game and having a cheat code," he says. The CP3.IV features Nike's Podulon technology for comfort as well as lightweight, no-sew construction for performance. This is a groundbreaking shoe, especially for the player who relies on agility, speed and quickness, according to Nice Kicks. The Jordan CP3.IV retails for $118 as of early 2011.

Nike Zoom Kobe VI

The Nike Zoom Kobe VI comes in more colorways than the Lakers have won championships -- with a new one introduced seemingly every day. Nike incorporates its next generation Flywire technology into the Kobe VI to make it one of the lightest basketball sneakers ever made, while a dual-density sock-liner provides comfort and stability. The Nike Zoom Kobe VI retails for $225 in early 2011.

Nike LeBron 8 V2

Featuring the best cushioning available, LeBron 8 V2 is another groundbreaking shoe from Nike. Due to its focus on comfort and stability the LeBron 8 V2 is heavier than some of the other performance sneakers on the market. It's a good choice for larger, stronger players or for those who want to save their ankles, backs and knees. The Nike LeBron 8 V2 retails for $160 as of early 2011.

Adidas TS Heat Check

With Nike dominating the basketball shoe market, it's easy to forget there are other players in the game. Adidas seemed to check out for a while, but it's come blazing back with the new TS Heat Check. The TS Heat Check is as comfortable and stable as it is lightweight and responsive. It scores big with durability, grip and breathability, and can be worn by every type of player on and off the court. The Adidas TS Heat Check retails for $110 as of early 2011.
