B vitamins are essential for cell growth and metabolism. In particular, vitamin B12 is needed for the brain and immune system to function properly. Vitamin B12 can be found in a well-balanced diet rich in meats and dairy products. As we age, our bodies are not able to absorb as much vitamin B12 from foods, making supplementation necessary. While sublingual vitamin B12 supplements dissolve quickly under the tongue, there is not enough evidence to suggest that it is absorbed by the body any easier or faster.

Functions

Vitamin B12 is a water soluble vitamin that is needed by the body to maintain healthy cells. It is one of the eight known B vitamins. In the body, B vitamins help to break down the food that we eat into energy. Vitamin B12 is essential for proper brain functioning, red blood cell formation, DNA synthesis and healthy immune system functioning.

Recommendations

According to the National Institutes of Health, for adults, the recommended daily allowance, or RDA, for vitamin B12 is 2.4 micrograms. Foods rich in vitamin B12 include fish, meat, poultry, eggs, milk and breakfast cereals. A 3-ounce serving of clams provides 34 mcg of vitamin B12 and meets more than 500 percent of your daily vitamin B12 needs. Those who do not eat meat or other animal products may require a vitamin B12 supplement to meet their daily needs.

Supplements

While vitamin B12 is found in many foods, supplements are available. Supplements may be needed for those who do not consume animal products as well as those who are unable to absorb vitamin B12 from foods. In supplements, vitamin B12 is usually found as cyanocobalamin and cobalamin. Vitamin B12 can be found in multivitamins or as individual supplements. Dietary supplements are available as oral tablets as well as sublingual tablets and lozenges.

Sublingual Supplements

Unlike oral supplements that are swallowed, sublingual supplements, such as vitamin B12, are placed under the tongue. Once placed, the supplement is then left alone so it can dissolve. Because vitamin B12 is a water soluble vitamin, taking it does not require food. Sublingual vitamin B12 should be taken on an empty stomach. In the body, vitamin B12 combines with intrinsic factor, found in stomach acid, and is then absorbed and used by the body.
