This product is a protein shake mix from Optimum Nutrition. Protein shakes like this one may help you increase muscle mass and strength when you use them in conjunction with a resistance training program. The Optimum company produces Whey Gold in a variety of flavors from banana cream to chocolate mint to tropical punch. You can mix this powder into a shake by combining it with water or skim milk.

Whey Protein

Whey protein is the most prevalent ingredient in this shake mix, which should be obvious from the name of the product. Whey protein is a highly digestible protein found in milk. Food companies often use as a fat replacement in foods like low fat ice cream, baby formula and milk replacement products. In addition to enhancing muscle strength and mass, whey protein has other health benefits. Whey protein is effective as an appetite suppressant, improving symptoms of diabetes and preventing some allergies.

Glutamine

Glutamine is already the most abundant amino acid in the body but you can find extra in Optimum Nutrition Whey Gold. You may receive performance benefits from glutamine when training, especially if you are an endurance athlete. Over the course of a workout your body becomes depleted of glutamine which can affect your performance and even make you sick. A reduction of glutamine leads to a weakening of the immune system. You may be able to improve your performance and reduce your susceptibility to infection if you take a supplement with glutamine.

BCAA's

BCAA stands for branched chain amino acids. Branched chain amino acids are those amino acids that bind together to form protein. These amino acids are valine, leucine and isoleucine. These amino acids not only make up proteins but also one third of the skelatal tissue in the human body. These amino acids help to make up muscle tissue. Your body may break down muscle tissue to get to these amino acids in order to produce energy. A supplement with BCAA's may reduce the muscle damage your incur during a workout.

Milk

Milk or milk powder is not a principle ingredient in Optimum Nutrition Whey Gold but if you choose to mix your shake with it, milk becomes a significant component of your shake. In order to maximize health benefits you should use skim or fat free milk because these milks contain less calories and less fat than whole milk. Fat free milk contains 0 g of fat with only 13 carbs and 9 g of protein per 8 fl oz glass.
