Potassium is vitally important for healthy functioning of all cells in the body. Although most people obtain an adequate amount from fruits and vegetables, a doctor may prescribe supplements containing this mineral for certain gastrointestinal maladies or for those on potassium depleting diuretics. You must never take this supplement unless prescribed by a doctor, as too much potassium can be very harmful.

Benefits

In a study published in the Jan. 8, 1996, issue of "Archives of Internal Medicine," researchers found that potassium supplements reduced the blood pressure of an ethnic group whose diet was low in this mineral. Other studies don't show the same benefit, so it is possible the supplement helps only if the dietary intake is lacking.

Further research revealed that a diet high in potassium was beneficial for bone health and for a reduced risk of stroke. Tests regarding the effects of the supplements in reducing stroke risk showed no benefit. The bottom line is that while potassium is extremely valuable in many body functions, you do better to get it from dietary sources unless otherwise directed by a doctor.

Food Sources

Since a potassium rich diet benefits different health maladies, incorporate high content foods into your daily regimen. The following foods are good sources: acorn squash, baked potato, spinach, lentils, kidney beans, split peas, navy beans, butternut squash, watermelon, raisins, yogurt, orange juice, brussel sprouts, zucchini, collards, cantaloupe, milk and broccoli. Including a variety of vegetables and fruits into your meals will ensure an adequate intake of potassium, unless you have a medical condition which causes you to need more.

Side Effects

If you are on the extended-release tablets, you may notice a white tablet in the stool. This is a normal effect of the body discarding the shell after extracting the potassium. The most typically seen side effects are gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Less common effects include, but are not limited to, shortness of breath, irregular heart rhythm, weakness and confusion. If you experience any side effects, stop taking potassium and call your physician immediately. Some of these effects are very serious and you would need medical intervention.

Precautions

Inform your doctor of every medication you are taking, as this supplement has the potential to cause a great many drug interactions. He may need to change the dose of your medication or take other measures to ensure your safety. Potassium can make certain diseases worse so apprise your physician of all medical conditions you have, Make sure he is aware of any allergies. Notify your doctor immediately if you see black stools or other evidence of bleeding from the intestinal tract.
