Bikram yoga, sometimes called hot yoga, is done in a studio where the temperature is about 105 degrees. Most of the clothes you wear during other types of yoga will be too warm while practicing Bikram. Wearing the right clothes can mean the difference between a cleansing experience and one fraught with discomfort. Dress properly and you'll be able to concentrate on your posture and form, rather than your sweaty shirt and pants.

Tops

Most types of yoga can be practiced in a T-shirt or tank top, but Bikram will cause you to sweat profusely. Wearing the least amount of clothing is usually the rule. Women should wear sports bras or a tank top made of breathable material. Men can wear tank tops or go shirtless. Avoid wearing oversize, cotton T-shirts, which can become heavy with sweat and impede your movement on the mat.

Bottoms

Again, minimal clothing rules when it comes to the right bottoms for Bikram yoga. Small, form-fitting shorts are usually best for women and men can wear breathable shorts. Shopping at typical yoga clothing stores may not be the most effective strategy for finding shorts for Bikram, as other forms of yoga are usually practiced in pants or leggings. Instead, head to a runner's store for shorts that will wick away sweat while staying close to the body.

Footwear

Unless you instructor specifies otherwise, Bikram yoga is always practiced in bare feet. You'll need to be flexible to stretch your body into some of the 27 Bikram yogic asanas. Wearing chunky shoes or sandals can impede that movement and cause sliding on the slippery floor. If you can't go barefoot, try wearing socks with grips on the bottom, remembering that your feet will likely become hot during the session.

Accessories

Stock your yoga bag with items you'll need to practice Bikram. Since you're bound to sweat during your session, bring a towel to lay over the top of your yoga mat. A wet mat can become slippery, which could lead to injuries. Bring a refillable water bottle. Since you'll lose so much water through perspiration, you'll need to hydrate during and after your class. A snack can help with some of the light-headedness that can occur as a result of Bikram yoga, so stash nuts, a granola bar or a piece of fruit in your bag.
