Chickenpox is caused by a virus and usually affects children who have not been vaccinated for this condition. MayoClinic.com states that if you have chickenpox, you may develop many fluid-filled blisters that cause extreme itching. Chickenpox is a highly contagious illness that is caused by the same virus that also causes shingles. Although adults can get chickenpox, most people have the illness before the age of 10. Herbal supplements may effectively treat the symptoms associated with chickenpox. Always consult a doctor before using any herbal remedies.
Chickenpox
Chickenpox spreads easily from one person to another. If you touch the fluid from a chickenpox blister or are exposed to the coughs and sneezes of an affected individual, you may develop chickenpox. If you become infected, the blisters usually develop about two to three weeks later. Possible complications associated with chickenpox include encephalitis, Reye's syndrome, pneumonia, myocarditis, temporary arthritis and problems with your cerebellum.
Herbal Supplements
In her book "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," certified nutritional consultant Phyllis A. Balch states that several herbs have been used to help treat chickenpox. Catnip may effectively reduce fever and is appropriate for infants, children and adults. Other commonly used herbal supplements for chickenpox include burdock root, echinacea, ginger, goldenseal, pau d'arco and St. John's wort. Balch warns that you should not take echinacea for longer than three months, and that goldenseal should not be taken internally on a daily basis for more than one week at a time. Always consult a doctor before using any of these herbal remedies.
Most Effective Supplement
One of the most effective herbal supplements in treating chickenpox is catnip. Catnip, notes Balch, may effectively reduce fever, dispel intestinal gas, improve digestion and enhance sleep quality. Catnip is also helpful in treating colds and flu, inflammation, pain, stress and anxiety. This herbal supplement is well known for its soothing properties and can be consumed in a variety of ways, including as a tea. The leaves of the catnip plant are used in herbal medicines. Always consult a doctor before using catnip.
Disclaimer
In most cases, chickenpox self-resolves after several weeks. In some cases, however, chickenpox may lead to serious health complications. If you or your child has chickenpox, meet with your doctor to discuss treatment strategies, including the use of herbal supplements to ease your symptoms and improve your quality of life. Not all herbal supplements are appropriate, however. Ask your physician about herbs you should avoid, proper dosage and duration and what side effects you may experience.
