Stair steppers machines let you burn calories and tone your legs without placing as much stress on the joints as walking up stairs. Steppers also let you control the resistance from the foot pedals to modify the intensity of your workout. No matter your budget, a quality stepper exists that will work for you.

Schwinn 305p

If you're looking for an inexpensive, quality stair stepper, the Schwinn 305p matches the criteria. You get a trusted brand name and a price around $300, as of February 2011. The Schwinn 305p is a basic machine that has everything you actually need from a full-sized stepper, namely the pedals, handlebars and adjustable resistance. Simply twist a knob to change to another of the 12 resistance levels. A small computer display also shows your time, speed, total steps and estimated calories burned.

NordicTrack MTN 740 Stepper

The NordicTrack MTN 740 Stepper is a great choice for a mid-range stepper. The MTN 740 costs around $650 as of February 2011, and for that, you get a stepper with a sturdy base that is able to stand up to frequent use. This stepper has heart-rate sensors that show your heart rate on the display, along with your time, calories, speed and steps. There are built-in fans, and you also get iFit technology that allows you to download workout programs from the Internet or memory cards.

StairMaster FreeClimber 4200PT

The StairMaster FreeClimber 4200PT is expensive at around $2,500 as of February 2011, but for the price, you get near commercial quality for less than you'd spend for a commercial stepper. The FreeClimber 4200PT comes with 20 resistance levels, four workout programs and an electronic brake system that is identical to that used on commercial steppers. The display has an LED screen and shows time, distance, floors climbed, calories and step rate. The allowable step rate ranges from 26 to 174 steps per minute. It also has a reading rack. The machine does require an outlet and is larger than other models, so it is best for someone wanting a durable machine to use daily in a home gym.

Brookstone Fold-A-Way Cardio Stepper

The Brookstone Fold-A-Way Cardio Stepper is a portable stepper named best overall by the "Wall Street Journal." This stepper lets you work out as you would on a regular stepper but then folds up for easy storage when you're not using it. The stepper is cheaper, as well, with a price around $200 as of February 2011. This machine is best for people who need something that doesn't take up a lot of room and who don't require something as sturdy as what you'll find in a gym.
