How to Train for Elite Pro Wrestling

Professional wrestling isn't necessarily reserved for the enormous athletes you see on WWE programming. Many metro areas have regional stables of people of all sizes. At the elite levels, size matters more, but dedication to skills and athletic training can get you your chance to make the show. However, the final decision to bring in a new elite athlete includes many factors that are completely out of your control.

Step 1

Get involved at a professional wrestling gym by taking classes and spending social time with the managers and athletes. This will requiretuition money, but dedicated athletes can often work out a barter agreement of services instead of tuition within a year of starting. These services can include teaching beginner classes, which will only help you hone your skills.

Step 2

Eat a diet that fosters putting on extra lean mass. According to CNN Health correspondent Dr. Melina Jampolis, you can count on putting on only 1/2 lb. of muscle per week. This means adding 250 to 500 calories to your diet, plus the calories you burn in your wrestling workouts. Comprise these calories of proteins and vegetable fats for the best muscle gain results.

Step 3

Get three resistance training workouts per week, such as lifting weights or calisthenics. Large, strong muscles are important to professional wrestlers for three reasons. They give you the body strength you need to perform the moves. They protect your joints and organs by forming a layer of armor. They give you the attractive form recruiters look for when hiring people to join the elite leagues.

Step 4

Get four to five cardiovascular workouts each week, such as swimming or jogging. This will build your cardiovascular endurance, a vital trait of any pro wrestler.

Step 5

Attend independent wrestling shows as often as you can. This will expose you to the trends and practices of professional wrestling as it evolves. As soon as possible, transition from a spectator at these events to a performer.

Step 6

Keep training and attending shows, all the while establishing social contacts with anybody you identify as a decision maker. Eventually, your efforts will place you in more important roles in more important shows. This can lead to a spot with the elite wrestling organizations, including WWE and New Japan.
