Kobe Bryant has been one of the league's most explosive and prolific scorers since he entered the NBA in 1996-97 season. Bryant has shown he can score off the fast break, use his defense to steal the ball and create scoring opportunities and hit the jump shot. Bryant's ability to get open on a consistent basis allows him to get open shot opportunities and drain them consistently. Bryant works on his conditioning to outlast opponents and his shooting technique to maintain consistency.
Step 1
Work on your conditioning. When you want to shoot the ball like Kobe Bryant, you are looking to establish yourself as a dominant scorer. If you are successful, you will be on the floor 90 to 95 percent of the time in games. If you are not in excellent condition, you will tire out and lose your strength, and your shot will disappear.
Step 2
Create space for yourself in games if you want to shoot like Bryant. As your team gets into its offense run down court and establish your position on the side of the free throw line. Then take two or three steps back so your teammate can deliver you the ball on the right or left wing. Then determine what your defender is going to do. If you are quick enough to drive to the basket, your opponent will likely back off when you take a jab step as if you were going to drive. If he does this, you have the pace you need to take an open jump shot.
Step 3
Square up to the basket as you prepare to shoot. That means your shoulders and your upper body are directly facing the front of the rim. Gather yourself and jump quickly. Since your defender has taken a step backwards when you took your jab step. He is now scrambling to recover. A shooter with Bryant's athleticism will be at the top of his jump and releasing the ball by the time the defender is beginning his jump. Even if you don't have that kind of athletic ability, the jab step gives you time and space to shoot. Release the ball with a high arc when you are at the top of your jump.
Step 4
Snap your wrist forward when you release the ball. Your wrist should be loose and relaxed, and the middle finger of your shooting hand should be pointing directly at the front rim when you let the ball go. Notice that Bryant often holds his shooting form for several seconds after releasing the ball. This is done as a reminder to finish his follow through and not speed up the shooting process.
Step 5
Take hundreds of shots in the gym every day to build a consistent form. Bryant says he will take 700 to 1,000 shots in practice sessions before the season to help build a steady and consistent shot. Bryant's explosive scoring talent and shooting ability are the result of hard work in addition to his athletic gifts.
