Diverticulitis is the inflammation of diverticula, abnormal pouches along the colon. This inflammation can cause symptoms such as abdominal pain, problems with bowel movements, fever and nausea. In such cases, a clear liquid diet is prescribed to alleviate symptoms and prevent any further complications. This restrictive diet is generally only indicated for short-term use until the inflammation subsides.

Beverages

The bulk of a clear liquid diet consists of beverages. Tea and coffee without milk or cream are allowed and can be sweetened with honey. Water, sports drinks and clear sodas such as ginger ale are also included. Certain lactose-free supplements may also be appropriate should you require additional calories.

Soups

Broths or bouillon are the only types of soup recommended on a clear liquid diet. Blended soups are not appropriate as they are too difficult to digest.

Fruit

Though whole fruits are not included on a clear liquid diet, you are able to consume fruit juices like apple, grape or cranberry. Do not drink nectars or juices that have pulp.

Desserts

Gelatin, fruit-flavored ices, clear hard candies and popsicles are all appropriate sweets on a clear liquid diet. Be sure there are no bits of fruit in these items.
