Breast-feeding moms are often concerned about their milk supply, and they may look for natural ways to boost it. While there is little scientific evidence that herbal remedies actually increase a woman's milk supply, most are considered safe and potentially successful. Before choosing an herbal remedy, however, women need to know which herbs to take and which to avoid. It is also important to discuss your plans with your doctor.
Blessed Thistle and Fenugreek
There is some anecdotal evidence from nursing mothers' experiences that both fenugreek and blessed thistle can increase breast milk supply when taken regularly. Both herbs are generally considered safe for breastfeeding women, and they tend to work well in combination with one another. The Newman Breastfeeding Clinic and Institute recommends breast-feeding moms take three capsules three times daily; however, they also warn that there may be some variance in the potency of these herbs. Both herbs work quickly. If you don't notice any improvement within the first week or so, it might be time to try something else.
Fennel
Fennel is also considered a safe herbal remedy for boosting breast milk supply. While the evidence of any herb actually increasing a woman's milk supply is not scientifically tested, fennel is generally harmless for both mom and baby. Fennel can be taken in capsule form; however, it is also often available in combination with other herbs, such as fenugreek seeds, in the form of a tea. Follow the directions on the supplement bottle or the tea container.
Other Herbs and Teas
While blessed thistle, fennel and fenugreek are the more common herbal remedies used by nursing moms, a number of other ingredients are also thought potentially to boost breast milk supply. These include red raspberry leaf, chamomile, milk thistle, alfalfa and stinging nettle. These ingredients are often found in a combined form as tea for breastfeeding moms. Brewer's yeast may also help nursing mothers boost their breast milk supply. Brewer's yeast can be taken as a capsule or added to foods.
Herbs to Avoid
Some herbs should be avoided by nursing moms, whether in tea or capsule form, as they are potentially harmful for the baby. These include ginseng, licorice root, sassafras and comfrey. In addition, many fenugreek supplements also contain thyme. Avoid these blends. If in doubt about a particular herb and its effect on the baby, check with your obstetrician or your baby's pediatrician.
Other Remedies
In addition to herbal remedies, adding certain foods to the diet can help a nursing mom boost her milk supply. Breastfeeding moms should eat oatmeal daily. In addition, including both garlic and ginger in your cooking may also help. While herbal remedies and alternative methods may help, the best way a mother can increase her milk supply is to nurse more often, ensuring the baby is latching correctly and has no difficulty drinking.
