In Ayurveda, an ancient form of holistic medicine, eye exercises are used to strengthen the eye muscles and purify the optic nerves. Western doctors are also seeing the benefits of eye exercises. The best eye exercises will depend on your individual symptoms. As with any new exercise routine, consult your doctor first.

Palming

Palming is one of the best exercises for relieving eyestrain and improving vision, says Ayurveda author Mukunda Stiles. With closed eyes, rub your palms together until heat is created. Place the palms over the eyes, but do not touch the eyelids. Try to block all light from coming in and open the eyes, focusing on the darkness. Perform as long as necessary and repeat regularly.

Distant to Close

While sitting at a window, focus on the furthest away object. Slowly bring your focus in closer until the focus is 3 feet away. Lift your forefinger up and gaze at the tip. Slowly move your finger in, continuing to gaze at the tip. Once the fingertip has reached your nose, turn back to the distant gaze. Repeat twice. This Ayurvedic exercise can be a good exercise for those suffering from depth perception issues.

Computer Vision Syndrome

This Ayurvedic exercise is beneficial to those suffering from dry or red eyes caused from working on a computer all day. With your eyes open, look all the way up and hold for three seconds. Close the eyes and hold for two seconds. Open the eyes and look all the way down, again holding for three seconds. Close the eyes and hold for two seconds. Repeat the above while looking to the right side and then to the left.

Trataka

Trataka is an eye cleansing exercise practiced by yogis since sometime between 800 and 400 B.C. To perform the exercise, stare at a candle flame, without blinking, until your eyes start to water. Then close your eyes and try to imagine the candle flame for as long as possible.
