Proper nutrition is paramount to those who already have stomach cancer, as well as those who wish to prevent it. One major disadvantage for those undergoing cancer treatment or taking pain medication is that the associated nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and lack of desire to eat can make it difficult to obtain adequate nutrition, says the National Cancer Institute. Most diets recommended for stomach cancer patients are designed for the individual.

Frequent Meals

If you are a cancer survivor who experiences a decreased appetite, you should consume small meals without liquids, says the American Cancer Society. The type of gastrectomy performed depends on the size of the tumor and can make it difficult to absorb nutrients necessary to remain healthy.

Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are nutrient dense and are highly recommended to those who have undergone stomach cancer surgery. A wide variety of colors of fruits and vegetables should be consumed. Bright red, orange, yellow and dark leafy greens provide your body with vitamins and minerals and help keep your blood cells healthy. Aim for at least five servings daily.

Soy Products

Soy products are rife with nutrients that help stomach cancer patients. They contain protein, fiber, omega 3 fats and several B complex vitamins. Foods derived from soy include soy nuts, yogurt, milk, beans and soy-based protein powders.

Dairy

If you have had cancer surgery, you may not absorb enough calcium, therefore increasing your risk of osteoporosis. Some dairy products, such as milk, yogurt and cheese may be difficult for you to tolerate; you can, however, gradually incorporate them into your diet. These products are excellent sources of calcium and vitamin D.
