According to the National Lung Cancer Partnership, lung cancer is the cause of a third of cancer-related deaths. Lung cancer, as well as many other forms of cancer, can be prevented through a healthy lifestyle that includes no smoking, regular physical activity and a balanced diet. Certain diets are antioxidant-rich, and may help prevent the onset of lung cancer. If you plan to undertake any drastic change in your diet, consult your doctor first.
Mediterranean Diet
The Mediterranean Diet is full of foods that contain antioxidants and essential vitamins and minerals to help prevent lung cancer. Many foods allowed on the Mediterranean diet include tomatoes, sage, olive oil, nuts, whole grains, carrots, and seafood. It limits the intake of red meat, sugars and refined or processed foods that contain saturated and trans fats. According to a study done at the Istituto Dermopatico dell'Immacolata in Italy, there is a correlation between the Mediterranean Diet consumption and decreased risk of lung cancer.
Vegan Diet
A vegan diet strictly prohibits consumption of animal products like beef, pork, chicken or turkey, which contain cancer causing saturated fats and cholesterol. This diet also eliminates trans fatty acids as well like cookies, cakes, chips, baked and commercial products. Vegans eat mostly fruits, vegetables, whole grains and soy products. According to a research article published in "Cancer Causes and Control," those who eat foods high in cholesterol have twice the lung cancer risk as those who consume minimal amounts.
DASH Diet
The DASH Diet was originally designed to control hypertension; however, it encourages overall health and weight control. Low-fat dairy products such as skim milk, cottage cheese and plain yogurt are promoted as part of the DASH diet. According to UC Berkeley Foundations of Wellness, low-fat dairy reduces the risk of lung cancer. The DASH Diet also encourages consumption of whole grains fruits and vegetables.
Ornish Diet
Dean Ornish, a cardiologist, developed the Ornish Diet as a way to prevent cardiovascular diseases. It emphasizes a low-fat diet, rich with fruits, veggies and whole grains. Many plant products allowed on the Ornish Diet contain Vitamin C, beta carotene and antioxidants to fight cancer-causing free radicals. Along with helping your heart, these foods can also help reduce the risk of cancer.
