How to Calculate BMI With a Calculator

The body mass index is a measure of a person's weight in relation to his height. A BMI below 18.5 is regarded as underweight; a BMI of 18.9 to 24.9 is considered normal; a BMI of 25 to 29.9 is overweight; and a BMI over 30 is obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The BMI is a guideline for determining if you are at a healthy weight for your height, but the BMI does not consider your body fat percentage, so it may be inaccurate for athletic people with a large amount of muscle mass, according to "Foundations of Nursing."

Step 1

Enter your height in feet and inches in the BMI calculator.

Step 2

Enter your weight in pounds in the BMI calculator.

Step 3

Click "Calculate" to have your BMI calculated. For example, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a person standing 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighing 140 lbs. has a BMI of 24, which is in the normal range.
