Lescol is a brand name of the generically named fluvastatin, a 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase inhibitor medication used to help reduce your cholesterol levels. Lovastatin is the generic name of another HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor designed to do the same thing. Both of these medications help prevent your body from creating cholesterol. Lescol has the potential to produce more common serious side effects than does lovastatin, warns MayoClinic.com, but both can cause side effects.
Flu-Like Symptoms
Lescol may produce serious side effects similar to the symptoms you would get if you had the flu or a cold. You may develop a fever, for example, along with the chills. Your nose may run, which is a condition called rhinitis. You may feel abnormally weak or tired when you take Lescol and you may have a cough and a sore throat. If you start treatment with this medication and you suddenly have flu-like symptoms, report this to your physician immediately.
Serious Pain
If you take Lescol to lower your cholesterol levels, different types of pain can occur as serious and relatively common side effects of the drug. You may get headaches, for example, or pain in your joints. You also may feel pain in your muscles. While these side effects may not appear serious, they do indicate potentially serious problems. You need an immediate consultation with your doctor if these pain side effects occur.
Non-Serious Pain
Lovastatin may produce pain as a side effect too. Lovastatin may induce pain in your stomach or in your head. It also may make your back hurt. This drug can induce pain in your joints and in your muscles also. These types of painful side effects typically occur when you start using lovastatin and then dissipate as your system adjusts to the drug. If, however, any type of pain occurs that seems serious to you, or if such pain remains longer than a week, speak with your medical practitioner.
Gastric Disturbances
When you use lovastatin, you may endure some transitionary side effects in your digestive system, Drugs.com indicates. You may become constipated with attendant cramping when you start this medication. You may also experience indigestion and mild nausea. These side effects should cause only temporary problems and go away once your body becomes acclimated to lovastatin.
