Strap-on skis fit to a child's ski boots. These skis allow children under age 4 to enjoying skiing with the rest of the family. Regular skis aren't made for very young kids. The earlier your child starts learning, the easier it will be for her and the sooner you can take family ski trips.
KID-SKI/XC Happy Skis
KID-SKI/XC Happy Skis from Apple Rise Sports allow children as young as 1 years old to ski using these plastic strap-on skis that fit onto ski books. The happy skis come with skis, bindings and poles for about $50, as of February 2011. Alpine Rise was founded by Steve Lathrop, a former member of the U.S. Ski Team and a U.S. downhill and combined champion skier. Along with Happy Skis, you can use Apple Rise Sports' teaching aids. Apple Rise claims that children as young as 2 month's old can learn to cross-country ski using this program. Children can often ski downhill by themselves at 2-1/2 years old.

Lucky Bums Youth Beginner Skis
Lucky Bums is another brand of skis that makes plastic strap on skis for young children. Young children can strap these skis on their boots for use in the backyard or a sled hill to learn the basics of skiing and get used to the feel of having skis on their feet. These skis do not have metal edges so are not recommended for use at ski resorts. The skis are 70 cm and are for children age 4 and younger.
Lucky Bums Heirloom Collection
For a classic look, you can get your kids the handmade wooden Heirloom collection youth wooden skis from Lucky Bums. These skis are made from wood with plastic bindings and webbing straps similar to the ones on the youth beginner skis. The Heirloom skis are recommended for the same conditions as the plastic youth beginner skis so don't plan to take these to a ski resort. Heirloom collection strap-on skis come in two sizes. The 70 cm length skis are for children age 3 and younger and the 90 cm skis are for 4- to 6-year-olds.
