Eye irritation, inflammation and burning occurs when allergens such as cigarette smoke, pollen, pet hair and dust mites come in contact with the eyes, notes the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. These allergens trigger the immune system to release histamines and other chemicals which cause the associated swelling, burning and inflammation of the eyes. Some herbal remedies may be effective at relieving this condition, but be sure to consult with your physician before using an herbal remedy containing eyebright herbs.
Eye Wash
Step 1
Add equal amounts of eyebright herb, bayberry bark, red raspberry leaves and goldenseal root to boiling water.
Step 2
Strain the herbal mixture into an eye cup using a nylon cloth. Make sure to also boil the eye cup to sterilize it prior to use.
Step 3
Allow the mixture to cool.
Step 4
Tilt your head backward and wash your eyes with herbal mixture.
Step 5
Repeat three to six times a day until allergies subside.
Eye Compress
Step 1
Add 1/2 tbsp. comfrey root powder and 1/2 tbsp. of goldenseal root power to 1 pint of distilled water, and simmer for 10 minutes.
Step 2
Remove from heat and add 1 tbsp. of eyebright herb.
Step 3
Heat for 10 more minutes.
Step 4
Strain the herbal mixture with a nylon cloth and apply to the eye.
Herbal Tea
Step 1
Add 1/2 oz. each of raspberry leaves, agrimoney, eyebright herbs, buckbean or bogbean to a quart of water.
Step 2
Simmer the herbal mixture for 20 minutes in a pan. Ensure the pan is covered.
Step 3
Strain the mixture to remove the roots and herbs.
Step 4
Drink 2 fl. oz. of this herbal tea four times a day.
