Rebounding in basketball is as much about effort and strategy as it is about leaping ability. You may be able to leap over the competition and grab a rebound, but you will have a better chance of getting the rebound if you are quick to the basket and can get inside position.

Cones

To improve your quickness going to the boards, set up athletic cones two feet outside the free throw line. Have your teammates shoot free throws. Instead of attacking the boards from the normal spot outside the lane, you will be farther out. You will need to be quicker to get to the boards and get the rebound. This will help you work on your quickness.

Backboard Without Rim

A flat backboard can be an ideal training tool for anyone who wants to improve rebounding talent. When there is no rim on the rim, the ball will always come down to the player looking for a rebound. This is a tool to use when you are working with your coach or one other player. It will teach you the angle the ball comes down and how to get in position to get control of the rebound.

Rebounding Ring

Placing a ring inside the rim will prevent the basketball from going through. The rebounding ring will help you get more practice at grabbing the ball after the ball rolls off the rim. This is a frustrating tool for shooters to use because the ball cannot go through the rim, but it will help rebounders get used to positioning themselves so they can get the ball that rolls right off the rim.

Basketball Return

The basketball return is a device that you set up on the side of the court. It allows the rebounder to work on passing the ball and getting rid of it quickly to get it to a point guard or shooting guard to start the fast break. In this drill, the rebounder will take a basketball, fire it off the trampoline-like return and catch it. This helps the rebounder turn a defensive rebound into offense quickly.
