Weight Watchers, an international weight-loss program, offers a variety of services and products designed to help people shed unwanted pounds. Weight Watchers programs use a system that assigns a point value to various foods based on the foods' nutritional facts. This point system is designed to make it easier for followers of the diet to keep track of their nutritional intake and the calories they consume. The program offers a weekly, face-to-face program and an online version.

Step 1

Talk to your doctor. Although Weight Watcher programs are safe for most people, it is wise to consult a doctor before beginning any weight loss program. Ask your doctor if she has specific recommendations for you to consider while on the program.

Step 2

Decide if you would like to participate in the online Weight Watchers program or sign up for face-to-face Weight Watchers meetings. Face-to-face meetings generally happen once a week, at which time you can speak to trained leaders and others going through the program. You also have weekly weigh-ins. This may be good if you'd like greater accountability. The online program offers interactive tools and a plethora of information, and may be a good option for those with hectic schedules that prevent them from attending weekly meetings.

Step 3

Check your budget. Regardless of the program you select, it costs money to join Weight Watchers. The amount varies depending on enrollment and current promotions, so check the Weight Watchers website or call a Weight Watchers customer service representative to determine the amount. Make sure you will be able to afford the fees before enrolling.

Step 4

Sign up for the program you have selected. This can be done through the Weight Watchers website, in person at any Weight Watchers location or by calling 1-800-651-6000.

Step 5

Read over the materials you are given. It should include information on how to calculate points you will be allotted per week, how to calculate point value for food and general information about the program you have selected.

Step 6

Set realistic goals based on what you have learned about the program. It may help to tell others of your weight-loss goals so you are more likely to stay accountable to the program.

Step 7

Follow the program as instructed. Speak to a Weight Watchers customer service representative if there is anything you do not understand.

Tips and Warnings

  • Joining Weight Watchers with a friend or family member may make the process more enjoyable. If you and your loved one are successful at holding each other accountable to your weight-loss goals, it may also increase your likelihood of weight-loss success.
  • Your Weight Watchers meeting membership will be cancelled if you miss four consecutive meetings. While it's possible to re-enroll if this occurs, it may be better to select the online membership if you expect to miss many meetings.
