Two pitch softball is a slightly modified version of the classic game, and is a popular sport in colleges and youth softball leagues. The game follows most of the standard rules of the game, and the few modifications to the game are simple enough to pick up quickly.
Pitching
The main difference between two pitch softball and the regular game is the pitching. In two pitch softball, each team has both a defensive and an offensive pitcher. The offensive pitcher pitches the ball to his own team, and the pitch must be made underhanded at a moderate speed. The other team's defensive pitcher must stand no further than 10 feet from the offensive pitcher, and is allowed to move in order to field the ball once the pitch has been released.
Batting
Each batter in two pitch softball will have two pitches to put the ball into fair play. If the ball is hit foul or is missed on the second pitch, the batter is out. Any attempt at bunting the ball will count the batter as out, and the ball dead. If a batter is walked, he will be allowed to proceed to second base. Each team is given three outs before the teams switch positions.
Fielding
Fielding the ball is by and large the same as regular softball, with only a few variations. If the offensive pitcher is hit by the ball, fields the ball, or makes any contact with the ball after it has been hit, the batter will be declared out and the ball dead. Any ball that is overthrown out of play by a fielder will result in awarding two bases to all runners from the last base they were on; for example, a runner on first will now be on third and a runner on second will score.
Miscellaneous Rules
There are no umpires in two pitch softball; the offensive pitcher is to make all of the calls on base and the catcher is responsible for calling balls fair or foul. Each team is limited to nine out-of-the-park home runs per game, any more after that will result in an out and a dead ball. Each game will last for seven innings or 50 minutes, whichever comes first, and runners stealing bases is prohibited.
