Treadmills contain various features and adjustments such as motor size and speed that combine to form the horsepower potential -- the measurement of the treadmill power. The horsepower allows the treadmills to be used by athletes, recreational runners or someone looking for weight loss to adjust the settings to their fitness level. However, with all of the features, parts, electronics and components, the horsepower can be off requiring basic repairs and calibration.
Repairs
Step 1
Unplug the power supply.
Step 2
Adjust the tightness of the walking belt with an Allen wrench. A walking belt that is overtightened will decrease horsepower and could eventually cause damage to the motor.
Step 3
Turn the adjustment bolts counterclockwise to loosen the walking belt or clockwise to tighten the belt. Continue turning the bolts until the belt is centered between the walking platform. A properly tightened belt will have 1 to 2 inches on each side of the walking platform.
Step 4
Press the reset button located on the underside of the display console with a pencil eraser or similar device.
Calibrating
Step 1
Press the "STOP" and "SPEED UP" keys at the same time while inserting the safety key.
Step 2
Press the "STOP" button one time followed by either "INCLINE" key. The time window on the display console should read "EP:2P" or "FP" depending on the model.
Step 3
Press and hold the "SPEED UP" key until "85" displays in the distance window. Be careful of the walking belt during this step because the treadmill will be operating at full speed.
Step 4
Adjust the maximum speed potentiometer according to the speed specifications -- a small black square with a white center located on the motor control board. Use a small insulated screwdriver to turn the adjustment knob clockwise to speed up the treadmill or counterclockwise to slow down the maximum speed.
Step 5
Press the "SPEED DOWN" key until the speed reaches 0 mph. Allow the treadmill and walking belt to stop completely.
Step 6
Press the "STOP" key and remove the safety key.
Tips and Warnings
- Make small adjustments to the speed potentiometer. Keep the treadmill properly cleaned and lubricated so the motor and walking belt can move freely.
- Always unplug the treadmill from the power source before performing any electrical repairs.
