It's usually possible to eat healthy at a party as long as you take the time to choose your snacks carefully. If you know ahead of time that the menu is going to have mostly unhealthy foods, you might be able to bring along some of your own snacks -- particularly if it's a friend who's throwing the party and you tell her beforehand that you just want some healthy options. It's also a good idea to have a healthy snack before going to the party so you won't be that hungry and tempted to make some unhealthy snack choices.
Vegetables
While steamed vegetables are unlikely to be part of a party's menu, you might have better luck finding raw veggies, usually next to a selection of dips. Skip cheese and mayonnaise dips and instead look for salsa, hummus or yogurt. If you can't find healthy dips, munch on the veggies alone or add some lemon juice or vinegar on top. Look for grilled or baked sweet potatoes or a cold potato salad made without the mayo and skip the fries. Olives, cherry tomatoes and artichoke hearts are also good options, but be sure that they're not swimming in oil.
Fruits
Look for the fruit platter if you're craving something sweet. Sliced bananas, grapes, strawberries or cherries are often found as party dishes. Fruit salads are another healthy choice, as long as they don't have added alcohol or sugar. Ask your host of try a small serving first to check.
Buffet
If the party has a buffet, take a walk around the table before you choose any snacks. Look for foods that aren't fried and don't have any added sauces or oils. Most parties offer at least a few vegetarian options such as vegetable skewers or salads. These are lower in calories and higher in nutrients than meat snacks, so pick them if you have the choice.
Other Options
Don't discard anything at first sight because you think it must be high in calories. Spring rolls are a good choice as long as they're not deep fried. Look for finger-size sandwiches, preferably made with chicken, turkey or tuna. Zucchini sandwiches are also a good choice. Avoid cheese if possible, as the calories add up quickly.
