The pomegranate is a bright-red, apple-sized fruit that grows on a small tree. It has a thick skin with several jewel-like seeds encased in small sections called arils. These seeds produce a tart juice. Pomegranates are an excellent source of vitamin C, potassium and fiber. They are also rich in polyphenols including tannins, ellagic acid and anthocyanins. You can easily peel and juice pomegranates at home to reap the benefits of their nutritional content.
Peeling and Cutting
Step 1
Cut of the crown of six pomegranates. Cut them into quarters as you would an apple.
Step 2
Place the pomegranates in a bowl and use your hands to slowly roll out the arils from the bitter white pith of the fruit. The arils should be enough to prepare 8 ounces of juice.
Step 3
Discard the white piths of the fruit. You won't juice the pith since it is too bitter.
Juicing
Step 1
Turn on your cold-press juicer and place a large cup under the its spout. A cold-press juicer will not heat the juice, keeping its nutritional content intact.
Step 2
Slowly add the arils to the juicer's spout. Use your juicer's tamper to push them down if needed. The juice should slowly pour out of the spout.
Step 3
Turn off the juicer when done. Drink the serving of pomegranate juice immediately or cool in the refrigerator if you prefer it chilled.
Tips and Warnings
- Mix pomegranate juice with other juices, such as orange or pineapple juice, for a change of pace.
