Is Bilberry Safe?

Native to Northern Europe, bilberry has been used as both a food source and medicinal supplement for hundreds of years. Traditionally, bilberry has been used as an antioxidant to help prevent and repair cell damage. Despite such health benefits, there are safety issues associated with bilberry supplementation that should be discussed with your doctor before beginning treatment.

Contraindications

Let your medical provider know if you have any health problems or concerns before you begin taking bilberry supplements. The safety of this supplement during pregnancy is unknown. As such, women who are pregnant or nursing should avoid treatment with bilberry. Additionally, stop taking bilberry supplements at least two weeks before undergoing surgery. Treatment with bilberry may increase your risk of experiencing bleeding complications during or following surgery.

Medication Interactions

Inform your physician of any medication you are taking before initiating treatment with bilberry. Concomitant use of bilberry and drugs indicated for diabetes should be avoided. Bilberry may lower your blood sugar, which may reduce the efficacy of diabetes drugs. Additionally, avoid taking bilberry supplements with medications that slow the rate at which your blood clots. Taking such treatments together may elevate your risk of developing unusual bruising or bleeding problems.

Long-term Treatment and Side Effects

Before taking bilberry, talk with your doctor about your recommended duration of treatment. Long-term treatment with bilberry should be avoided, as the safety of such treatment has yet to be fully examined in humans. Bilberry supplements contain tannins, which may be toxic in large doses. Side effects associated with consuming too many bilberry supplements may be life-threatening and include muscle spasms and severe weight loss. Seek prompt care from your physician if you believe you have consumed too much bilberry to ensure immediate and appropriate care.

Additional Side Effects

When taken as directed, bilberry supplements are typically safe and are not known to cause side effects. However, if you experience any health problems while taking bilberry, contact your doctor.
